From generation to generation, traditions of food preparation are passed down orally in the same household. Gujarati home cooks rely on their senses to produce a quality dish, and adjust based on the color, texture, and smell of the dish, rather than the documented instructions.Growing up in the US, I never learned this oral tradition of cooking and missed eating Gujarati food when I moved away from home. To connect with my culture, I created this cookbook to replicate the same traditional dishes I grew up eating.This book tells the story of my family history, including the significance of each dish, and our family’s memories and traditions. Each recipe I’ve transcribed is traditional, practical, and a testament of time - these recipes aren’t glamorous or trendy, but they are deeply meaningful because they represent the cooking of my people.
